Bitcoin is digital gold because it’s decentralized, but what makes it decentralized? People like you, running nodes of the network and making sure transactions are validated and written into the blockchain in a truly decentralized and global fashion.

But there are more benefits of running your own bitcoin node than just the virtue of keeping the bitcoin network what it’s supposed to be. You can take full control of your bitcoin transactions and run your own little bitcoin hub for you and your family from the comfort of your home. The amount of effort and money you need for that is pretty low. 

## What is a bitcoin node vs. miner

In blockchain, nodes are computers validating transactions and broadcasting them to be recorded into the blockchain. In bitcoin, as well as some other blockchains, there is a difference between a validating node and a miner: while nodes only validate transactions as compliant with the blockchain’s rules, miners also record them into the blockchain – and receive a reward for that (that’s how new bitcoins are being created). 

Bitcoin mining these days requires significant investment into specialized hardware, as well as electricity bills – these machines consume a lot of power, and you need to constantly cool them down, too. Maintaining a node, on the other hand, doesn’t cost that much and also does not reward you with new bitcoins – but it helps you keep your financial sovereignty on the maximum level.

A full node downloads and stores a copy of the entire blockchain, down to the genesis block and the very first transaction. It validates all incoming transactions and blocks and enforces the bitcoin consensus rules: the supply cap of 21 million bitcoin, how new coins are issued and how double spends are prevented.  

A lighter version, which is called a **pruned node**, saves memory space by deleting old blocks. Then, there is a so-called **light node**, which only downloads headers of the blocks and relies on other, full nodes. In this article, we will be talking about full nodes.

## Why run your own Bitcoin node

A node is essentially an intermediary validator that passes transactions to miners so they can add them to the blockchain. You can configure your wallet so that your transactions go through your node – this way, you won’t rely on any companies to process them.

It’s the most private and secure way to process your transactions: when your wallet connects to someone else’s server, they can see your IP address and your extended public key (XPUB), so whoever is operating the node can link your IP to all your transactions. Relying on your own node means you keep all that data to yourself. 

You can also do some other fun stuff: 
- participate in CoinJoins with maximum privacy; 
- buy and sell bitcoin on trustless p2p marketplace like Bisq; 
- receive payments in a private fashion via PTC Pay server; 
- run your Lightning node like a pro; 
- get information on the state of the network and look up wallets while getting data directly from the blockchain. 

You can also use your bitcoin node to do things not directly related to bitcoin, like taking advantage of decentralized data storage solutions with InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), managing a nostr client for a decentralized analog of X, and more. 

## Bitcoin node hardware

So where to start? Buy some hardware – luckily, you don’t have to spend a whole lot of money on it. In fact, you can run a bitcoin node on any computer, however, doing so will most likely turn it unusable for anything else, so it’s more practical to buy a separate device. 

The easiest option is to buy a ready-to-use node with pre-installed code, and there are a bevy of them on the market now: [Umbrel](https://umbrel.com/), [MyNode](https://mynodebtc.com/), [Start9](https://store.start9.com/), [Nodl](https://www.nodl.eu/products/). The price tag for these starts at $500. This is the fastest and easiest way, however, you would need to trust the hardware maker to install the right code on the device (not that trustless!) – and you won’t get the full DIY experience. 

A cheaper and more hands-on option is to buy a mini computer and install the bitcoin code on it yourself. These machines cost $200 – $400 on average. Some old bitcoiners told me HP EliteDesk Mini does the job pretty well, but there are also other [options](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mini+pc&i=electronics&s=price-desc-rank&crid=38KTGHD1K1D14&qid=1772408071&sprefix=mini+pc%2Celectronics%2C158&ref=sr_st_price-desc-rank&ds=v1%3A44ntS7wX%2Fb%2FJC%2FYRcaLrT3FR0DbVN9GC83sf2uH4k5E). Keep in mind that you’ll need 64 GB of memory to run the code and about 2 TB to store the blockchain data – you can also buy SSD cards for that separately. And if you want to go full DIY fun mode, take a look at the Raspberry Pi or RockPro 64 mini computers – these can cost as little as $50. 

General hardware requirements:
- vCPU Core 2Ghz (boost),
- 4 GB RAM,
- Ethernet port.

## Bitcoin node software options

When you get your hardware, if it’s not a pre-installed out-of-the-box solution, you’ll need to install the bitcoin software on it. There is a range of open source clients you can use: Umbrel, Start9, ezNode, myNode, RaspiBlitz, RoninDoJo. You would need to flash your mini computer or 64 GB memory card with the software, then fire up your node. Freedom Lab NYC provides some handy step-by-guides for setting up your Bitcoin node using the [Umbrel](https://freedomlab.nyc/resources/bitcoin-node-umbrel/), [StartOS](https://freedomlab.nyc/resources/bitcoin-node-startos/) or doing it the hard way and compiling the Bitcoin Core software [from source code](https://freedomlab.nyc/resources/bitcoin-node-from-source/) (only for advanced bitcoiners). 

This process requires patience: sometimes, things don’t work right away and you need to erase, reboot and start from scratch. Don’t lose faith, have fun with it! After you get your node up and running, give it time to download the bitcoin blockchain and synchronize with the network. It may take several days at this point – the bitcoin blockchain has gone a long way since 2009! 

## Benefits of running a bitcoin node

Alright, you did it, now what? You just joined the global community: there are currently over 25,000 bitcoin nodes running around the world, according to [Bitnodes](https://bitnodes.io/nodes/all/). If you check the link, it also shows the global Bitcoin node distribution map, however, most nodes have no geolocation. That’s a feature, not a bug: the best practice is to connect bitcoin nodes to the internet via Tor to maintain privacy of their owners, so you definitely should pay attention to that while setting up your node. Unless you want to intentionally put yourself on the global bitcoin node map!

The most important thing you can do once you’ve got your bitcoin node up and running is to connect your wallet to it – check your wallet app’s settings to do it. These ways, only your node will know your IP, wallet and transaction details. If you are the lead bitcoiner of your family helping everyone else to figure it out, you can also help them connect their wallets to your node, too. If you want to use Lightning and not rely on any intermediaries to open your channels, you can connect your Lightning node and your bitcoin node for a maximum trustless setup. To be clear, you can run a Lightning node without running your full bitcoin node, but that way, you would rely on other people’s nodes to connect to the bitcoin blockchain. 

You can also use your node to receive bitcoin payments in a private fashion, without publishing your wallet address: set up a BTC Pay server so that it generates a new address every time someone wants to pay you through your website.

The more you try, the more you learn – once you get your bitcoin node running and familiarize yourself with the game, you might discover a lot of other things you can do using the same hardware. Your own bitcoin node: why and how to run it

You bought some bitcoin – congratulations! Now it’s time to think about how to keep your Bitcoin safe and handy for your needs. The best option for your bitcoin storage is directly related to what you are planning to do with your coins, so it’s important to approach this question strategically. In this article, we will break down different **Bitcoin storage methods** and explain their advantages and tradeoffs, from easy to the most complex solutions.

## Centralized crypto exchange account

The most basic one for newbies and day traders – the fact that you use HodlHodl is already a sign that you’re not the part of that typical crowd, but hold on, we'll explain. Centralized exchanges are the easiest way for crypto neophytes to buy their first bitcoin – and the fastest way to sell. 

What is a centralized exchange? Centralized exchanges (think Binance, HTX, Kraken, etc.) put your bitcoin in a so-called omnibus wallet where your funds will be mixed with other users’ coins. Once you send your bitcoin there, your exchange is in charge of it – basically, it will sell it for you or let you withdraw it when you request it. 

The obvious upside is convenience: exchanges normally have multiple payment methods available, as well as multiple smart trading tools and order types, so it's a handy instrument for users who trade a lot.  

The biggest downside – **not your keys, not your bitcoin**! While your coins are in the custody of an exchange, it’s up to the exchange whether to let you use it or not. And if your exchange gets hacked and the crypto gets stolen – your bitcoin might be gone with the rest of the loot. And of course, any centralized exchange at this point will require a KYC check to register and account – you’ll have to provide plenty of personal information like your address, banking info, and even biometric face data. All that data can be stolen if your exchange is compromised, too. 

## Software wallets

Software wallets on your phone or desktop are the easiest way to make sure no one but you is in charge of your coins. There are multi-coin wallets that allow you to store various cryptos and ones that support only bitcoin. 

Keeping your bitcoin on your own device means the cryptographic keys to your money only exist on that device. This way, nobody else has access to your keys unless you share them – or share your seed phrase, which is a set of 12 or 24 words that wallets recognize as a representation for your keys when you’re recovering your wallet. And of course, that’s the biggest advantage of this method: you can use your crypto without a middleman. 

However, this autonomy can also be a downside: if you lose your device and fail to make a backup, you lose access to your bitcoin and nobody can help you retrieve it. You must have heard the [horror stories](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin_buried_in_Newport_landfill) of people who forgot they had bitcoin on their old devices, threw those devices away and only later realized they lost millions of dollars in bitcoin!

There are [hackers](https://www.wired.com/story/unciphered-ironkey-password-cracking-bitcoin/) who might be able to recover your keys for a reward, but no guaranteed way to do it has been found so far – otherwise, everyone would be cracking each other’s software wallets open! Takeaway: power means responsibility – you need to develop a certain discipline and a set of security habits to keep your bitcoin secure on your device. 

There is another thing to keep in mind: software wallets can be compromised. In 2023, users of Atomic Wallet lost up to [$100 million](https://www.elliptic.co/blog/analysis/north-korea-linked-atomic-wallet-heist-tops-100-million) altogether due to a hack, with trace leading to North Korean hackers.

Samourai wallet used to be one of the most popular anonymity wallets but the project got shut down after the U.S. authorities seized the website and convicted founders of operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business.

## Hardware wallets

Hardware crypto wallets are a more sophisticated and expensive option for people who don’t feel safe keeping their crypto on the same device they use for email and messenger apps. What are hardware wallets? Hardware wallets are dedicated devices created exclusively for storing bitcoin keys. Looking like a USB stick or a tiny calculator, hardware wallets typically have minimalistic design, small screens and one or the other way of connecting to other electronic devices. 

The main trade-off is the same as for software wallets: if you lose your device and your backup, you lose your bitcoin. But as long as you have them, nobody can touch your coins. 

## What are the differences between hardware and software wallets?

The key advantage compared to software wallets is that hardware wallets normally are not connected to the internet, so it’s impossible to compromise them with software exploits. A desktop or a phone can catch a virus from a shady website or app, but a hardware wallet is mostly (or always) offline. Plus, hardware wallets’ technical design is pretty basic, so it can’t run any kind of software other than the one it was designed for: signing bitcoin transactions. 

Hardware crypto wallets have their own specific attack vectors, for example, someone can steal and physically meddle with the device. It’s also possible to imagine a supply chain attack in which someone physically compromises a batch of hardware wallets – or manufactures compromised devices by design, making it possible to steal from the future owners. 

To date, there hasn’t been a known supply chain attack on the hardware wallets as such, however, in 2023, Ledger suffered a software supply chain breach when a threat actor compromised an employee and [published](https://thehackernews.com/2023/12/crypto-hardware-wallet-ledgers-supply.html) malicious code that infected popular dApps and drained funds from users that connected to those dApps.  

To use a hardware crypto wallet to spend your bitcoin, you need to temporarily connect it to your computer or phone using one or several of the available methods:


- usb port or USB cable, 
- Bluetooth,
- microSD card,
- QR codes if a wallet has a camera,
- NFC (Near Field Communication) – the same technology that allows contactless payments via credit cards and phones.

For that, you would need to buy a cheap development board, for example, [LilyGO T-Display](https://lilygo.cc/en-us/products/t-display?srsltid=AfmBOoonWTC7LIvXFWXAB53hvAxLLoixY3M3qq3RSgrYp_Mz0sdxdRL7). Then, you need to connect it to your desktop and flash it with open-source wallet software, for example, [Blockstream Jade](https://github.com/Blockstream/jadediyflasher). 

Check this [guide by Freedom Labs](https://freedomlab.nyc/resources/diy-hardware-wallet/#easy-way-hard-way) if you’d like to try – the whole process requires about an hour of your time (a generous estimate) and a few dollars to spend on hardware. The process may be confusing at times if you don’t deal with computer hardware and open-source code on a regular basis, but it’s pretty fun exercise for anyone who is curious about true, die-hard sorts of self-custody.

## Multi-signature solutions

First, let us admit: multisigs are not for beginners! How does multisig work? A multi-signature wallet is a whole setup that allows you to distribute control over your bitcoin between several devices – hardware wallets or phones/computers with software wallets on them – so that if one device is lost, stolen or compromised, you still can use your bitcoin. 

This kind of storage is normally used for large amounts of bitcoin or for situations in which several people or entities jointly own and manage a bitcoin treasury. Typically, there are few schemes for multisigs: 2-of-2, 2-of-3, and 3-of-5. 

To spend bitcoin in a multi-signature wallet , several wallets need to sign the transaction – only then it will be broadcasted to the network. For example, two people can agree to put bitcoin in a joint wallet and only spend it when they both agree. Or you can set up your own 2-of-3 multisig so that when you want to spend your bitcoin, you’ll need to sign the transactions with two out of three devices you own – for example, your phone, your desktop and your hardware wallet. 

HodlHodl smart contracts, for example, rely on 2-of-3 multisigs: when users initiate a trade, a seller locks bitcoin into a multisig. The multisig needs two out of three signatures to release funds: one signature is controlled by the seller, one by the buyer, and the third one by HodlHodl, which can use it to resolve disputes. 

For users who are willing to pay for the secure cold storage of their bitcoin, there are institutional solutions offered by companies like Casa, where you can configure your multisig in a way that keys to your joint bitcoin treasury are distributed between you, your family or business partners, and a third party guarantor.

**How Your Bitcoin Stays Safe**

## What is Escrow?

1. Contract Creation — Once a trade contract is started, Hodl Hodl generates a unique multisig escrow Bitcoin address for that specific trade.

2. Seller Deposits Bitcoin — The seller sends Bitcoin from their wallet to the escrow address, where it becomes locked.

3. Buyer Sends Payment — The buyer sends fiat payment to the seller using the agreed payment method.

4. Release from Escrow — Once the seller confirms they've received the payment, they release the Bitcoin from escrow directly to the buyer's wallet address.

## What Happens in a Dispute?

**Both the buyer and the seller can start a dispute. Once a Hodl Hodl administrator reviews and resolves the dispute, they can use the Hodl Hodl key combined with either the buyer's key or the seller's key to release the funds from escrow to the rightful party.**

**This is the power of 2-out-of-3 multisig escrow: it provides a fair resolution mechanism while ensuring no single party has unilateral control.**

2025 in Review: A Year of Growth, Education, and Building at Hodl Hodl

Your security and safety are our top priorities at Hodl Hodl. To help protect your account and trades, we’ve compiled essential platform security guidelines every user should know. Before entering into any contract on the Hodl Hodl trading platform, we strongly recommend reviewing this security trading guide to ensure a safe, secure, and informed trading experience.

## If you are looking to sell BTC

**Send BTC only through escrow**

You should never send BTC anywhere other than the escrow address generated by Hodl Hodl. The details of the escrow address are only shown after both parties have confirmed their payment passwords and the contract status has changed to “Depositing”.

**Never release bitcoin from escrow until you receive the payment**

You should release bitcoin ONLY AFTER you have double-checked that the payment has been received and its amount reflects the amount of the deal.

Remember: The payment part of the contract happens without Hodl Hodl’s involvement. Fiat payment is transferred directly from the buyer to the seller.

NOTE: A payment receipt provided by your counterparty is not a 100% guarantee. You are not safe to continue unless you see the balance of your fiat account reflect the amount of the payment. Do not trust, VERIFY!

**Be aware of reversible payment methods**

Be aware of any risks associated with the payment method you aim to use. Note that some payment methods are riskier than others. For payment methods like “PayPal”, be aware of the risk of the payment being reversed.

## If you are looking to buy BTC

**Do not send the payment until the bitcoin is locked in escrow**

Sending money any earlier is highly insecure. Only after the contract status has changed to “In progress”, are the bitcoin safely locked in escrow, and only then, you are welcome to proceed with the payment.

Note: You are expected to make the payment within the payment window, otherwise, your counterparty will be able to cancel the contract.

**Do not forget to press the “I’ve sent the payment” button after the payment has been made**

You should press the button right after you’ve made the payment. Otherwise, after the payment window runs out, your counterparty will be able to cancel the contract and refund the bitcoin back to himself.

Note: When the button is pressed and the status of the contract has changed to “Paid”, the contract cannot be cancelled.

## General bitcoin security trading rules

**Do not open suspicious links in the contract’s chat**

Hodl Hodl does not generate nor share any links in the contract’s chat. Only open links you are familiar with.

If it seems like the administrator has shared a link, please note that messages from Hodl Hodl’s administrators are highlighted in yellow.

**Set First-trade limit**

As we all know, initiating trades often requires accepting requests from new users, setting a first-trade limit helps reduce potential risk. This feature caps the value of your initial transaction with any new user to the amount you choose. In addition, offers that include first-trade limits tend to be less appealing to fraudulent buyers.

**Protect Your Hodl Hodl Account with Two-Factor Authentication**

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is mandatory for everyone who registers on Hodl Hodl, making account security stronger from the very first login. By adding an extra layer of protection beyond your password, 2FA ensures that only you can access your account, even if your credentials are compromised.

Be sure to securely store your recovery codes when enabling 2FA, as they are essential for regaining access if you ever lose access to your 2FA device.

**Do not enter your account data on any other website**

We would never request your account details anywhere other than on our websites, that is, those with the hodlhodl domain name.

BEWARE of phishing websites looking like Hodl Hodl. If you enter your credentials into a fake site, your account could be compromised and your BTC locked in escrow could be released without your knowledge.

**Never reveal your payment password**

Your payment password is your key to accessing the escrow. You are the sole owner of that key, and no one else, including Hodl Hodl, should know it.

**Communicate only in the contract’s chat**

Avoid texting in Telegram, WhatsApp, etc. In case you require assistance from our side, we would only be able to assess the information in the contract’s chat.

**Pay attention to user’s reputation**

To better protect yourself, always pay attention to the user’s reputation and ratings — they reflect the experience other users have had dealing with this trader in the past.

**Beware of impersonators**

Bad actors may create usernames much like those of your trusted traders trying to confuse you (tiger5rng impersonating tiger5nrg), so you make a payment based on confidence gained in previous trades.

Let’s talk about the next myths about bitcoin.

## Myth 6: “Bitcoin Can Be Turned Off”

Some believe that governments or large corporations could simply “turn off” Bitcoin. Could the government shut down Bitcoin? In reality, Bitcoin can only be shut down if the entire internet and electricity grid worldwide were turned off.

Bitcoin is a decentralized network run by thousands of nodes across the globe. There’s no central server, no single office, and no “off switch.” As long as one computer anywhere in the world remains online, Bitcoin continues to function.

## Myth 7: “It Takes a Lot of Money to Buy Bitcoin”

Many people think they need thousands of dollars to start with Bitcoin. The truth? You can buy a tiny fraction of a Bitcoin — even just a few cents worth.

Bitcoin is divisible up to eight decimal places, meaning you can own 0.00000001 BTC (called one satoshi). If you want to try it out, you don’t need to buy a full Bitcoin — you can start small.

## Myth 8: “The Bitcoin Train Has Already Left”

It’s common to hear, “I’m too late; I should’ve bought it years ago.” But that’s like saying you’re too late to use the internet because websites already exist.

Bitcoin is not a trend — it’s a technological breakthrough in money. The best time to start learning or using it is always now. Just like upgrading a dull knife for a sharper one, adopting better financial technology is never “too late.”

Bitcoin continues to grow, evolve, and be adopted globally — meaning its story is far from over.

## Myth 9: “Bitcoin Is the Same as Other Crypto Projects”

Bitcoin was launched through an open and decentralized process, without pre-mining, venture capital, or a company behind it. Anyone could (and still can) join the network, mine Bitcoin, and contribute improvements.

Today, Bitcoin remains the most decentralized and secure blockchain in the world. There’s no CEO, no marketing department, and no foundation controlling it. Compare that to most new crypto projects, which are often run by small teams, have business plans, and are built for profit — Bitcoin stands apart as open, neutral, and leaderless.

That’s also why central banks, large companies, and even governments are now holding bitcoin on their balance sheets.

## Myth 10: “Bitcoin Is a Bubble with No Real Value”

“Bitcoin has no value,” some say. If that’s true, please — send me five bitcoin right now.

Value doesn’t come from thin air; it comes from what people are willing to exchange for it. Bitcoin’s price is set freely by millions of buyers and sellers around the world — not by any company or government.

Moreover, value is subjective. If you’re in a desert dying of thirst, a bottle of water is worth far more than a kilo of gold. Bitcoin’s value lies in what it offers — a decentralized, censorship-resistant form of money that anyone can hold, transfer, and verify without trusting intermediaries.

## Conclusion

## What is Forced Liquidation?


Forced Liquidation — occurs if the price of bitcoin fluctuates enough to make the LTV ratio rise higher than 90%, and there have been no attempts from the Borrower to either increase the amount of Collateral or partially repay the debt in order to keep the LTV ratio at the required level.

The Borrower will receive 3 margin call notifications prior to a Forced Liquidation. What is margin calling? A margin call occurs when the value of the Collateral falls below the value the Contract requires.

In case the Borrower has not responded, and the LTV ratio has risen higher than 90% — both the Lender and the Borrower will be informed about the start of a Forced Liquidation procedure. In this case, the Contract will be terminated and the Collateral will be transferred to the Lender.

Forced Liquidation can also occur if the Borrower failed to repay the debt. In this case, after the Contract period has ended, and there have been no attempts from the Borrower to repay the debt within 24 hours, Forced Liquidation occurs.

Important things to remember about forced liquidation
### 

### For Lenders:

Even if Forced Liquidation occurs, there is no risk of not receiving your interest, since all loans are over collateralized.

Also note, that in case the contract has been liquidated, **you will receive the debt** (loan amount + interest) **in bitcoin**. So, if you are afraid of bitcoin’s volatility, and a Forced Liquidation occurs, you should monitor the price of bitcoin, and be prepared to convert bitcoin into stablecoins in a timely manner.

### For Borrowers:

In case Forced Liquidation occurs, there will be an additional cost — a Forced Liquidation fee of 5%.

In case the amount locked in the multisig escrow address is greater than the outstanding debt — the difference will be refunded to you.


## Some tips that will help you avoid Forced Liquidation


**1. Set a low LTV ratio**

What is the LTV ratio? The LTV ratio shows the relation between the Loan amount and the value of the Collateral. And in case the value of the Collateral goes down — the LTV ratio goes up, and additional Collateral will be required to balance this ratio.

In general, a higher LTV ratio entails a higher risk of contract liquidation. Thus, lower LTV ratio = more collateral.

**2. Send more BTC to escrow**

Even if you are entering into a contract with 70% LTV you can always protect yourself by purposely sending more collateral to escrow. In this case, even if the price of bitcoin goes down, you will have more time to react.

**3. Monitor the exchange rate**

Keep an eye on the exchange rate, if bitcoin’s price is going down, remember to log into your Hodl Hodl account and check the current LTV ratios of your ongoing contracts.

4. Use a valid email address**

When creating an account, sign up with a valid email address, since all of your notifications about your contract statuses and updates will be sent there.

**5. Repay the debt on time or even earlier**

Do not wait until the last moment, remember you can always complete your contract by early repayment.

**6. React if you receive a Margin call**

Increase the Collateral amount or partially repay the debt to keep the LTV ratio at the required level.

HODL: How to avoid Forced Liquidation

**Bitcoin's run above $120,000—reaching new all-time highs above $125,000 in early October 2025—has coincided with a dual security crisis: a sharp rise in violent "wrench attacks" against holders and record-pace digital thefts targeting the broader digital asset ecosystem, with North Korea linked to the year's largest incident.** Chainalysis' mid-year findings show 2025 is on track to surpass prior records for value stolen from services, and that physical attacks rise with bitcoin's forward-looking price trend. Bitcoin's latest price highs were reached on October 5, 2025.

The picture that emerges from public data and primary sources:

- **Physical attacks are surging alongside price.** Chainalysis documents a clear price-attack correlation and says 2025 is "well on track" to exceed prior peak years. An independent analysis reported a **169% increase** in incidents over roughly six and a half months in 2025, drawing on Chainalysis data and [Jameson Lopp's incident log](https://github.com/jlopp/physical-bitcoin-attacks/). Lopp's long-running open database shows dozens of cases in 2025, already eclipsing many prior years.

- **North Korea and the Bybit theft dominate this year's service losses.** On **February 21, 2025**, attackers stole about **401,000 ETH (~$1.5B)** from exchange Bybit. On **February 26**, the [FBI attributed the theft](https://www.ic3.gov/psa/2025/psa250226) to DPRK actors tracked as **TraderTraitor** and published laundering addresses. Chainalysis notes that **Bybit alone accounts for ~69%** of all funds stolen from services year-to-date.

- **Digital theft totals and pace.** [Chainalysis recorded](https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/crypto-crime-mid-year-update-2025/) **$2.17B** stolen from services **through June**—**17% more than 2022** at the same point—and 2025 reached **$2B in 142 days** versus **214** in 2022. September was particularly heavy: CertiK counted **16 incidents above $1M** and about **$156M** in losses, while PeckShield tallied roughly **$127M** using a stricter set. Separate reporting on Q3 indicates centralized services bore the largest share that quarter.

## Physical attacks: what the 2025 spike actually shows

- **Correlation with price.** Chainalysis finds a "clear correlation" between wrench-type incidents and a forward-looking moving average of bitcoin's price: as expected future value rises, attacks follow.

- **Geography.** Chainalysis highlights growth in **Eastern Europe**, **MENA**, and **CSAO** (Central, Southern & Eastern Asia and Oceania), while the United States and several G7 economies still account for many incidents. France has seen multiple high-profile cases in 2025 involving kidnappings and severe violence.

- **"One per week" warning.** SatoshiLabs founder **Alena Vránová** told the **Baltic Honeybadger 2025** audience that *"every week, at least one Bitcoiner somewhere in the world is kidnapped, tortured or extorted."* Coverage also noted incidents over amounts as low as ~$6,000 and murders near ~$50,000.

## The Bybit catastrophe: attribution, method, and laundering

While Bybit is an altcoin exchange and the stolen assets were Ethereum-based, the incident illustrates the threats facing the entire digital asset space—including Bitcoin holders who use centralized services.

- **Attribution.** The FBI's **February 26** Public Service Announcement formally links the Bybit theft to DPRK's **TraderTraitor** actors, publishes addresses, and warns services to block associated flows. TRM Labs independently mapped overlaps with prior DPRK operations.

- **Probable attack path.** Multiple post-mortems indicate a **supply-chain/UI-level compromise** connected to **Safe{Wallet}** infrastructure, in which malicious code or signer deception redirected a routine cold-to-hot transfer. Safe reported a developer machine compromise tied to one affected account.

- **Laundering speed.** At least **$160M** moved within 48 hours, with hundreds of millions moved within days via swaps and bridges before off-ramps.

- **Shift into BTC.** On **March 20, 2025**, Bybit CEO **Ben Zhou** said **86.29%** of the stolen ETH had been **converted to bitcoin** as part of DPRK laundering.

## 2025's theft landscape and evolving methods

- **Totals and pace.** **$2.17B** stolen from services by **June** (mid-year), **17%** ahead of the 2022 pace; 2025 reached **$2B in 142 days** versus **214** in 2022.

- **Target shift.** Exploitation of **human and infrastructure weaknesses** (keys, session tokens, third-party dev environments) continues to outpace pure protocol-level bugs. Personal-wallet compromises represent **~23.35%** of stolen value year-to-date, a marked increase.

- **Unlaundered balances.** Chainalysis estimates **~$8.5B** from personal-wallet thefts and **~$1.28B** from service thefts remain **on-chain and not yet laundered**.

- **North Korea's share.** Separate Q3 tallies indicate **about half** of stolen funds were linked to DPRK-associated activity during the quarter.

- **What launderers pay for speed.** To push funds through quickly, laundering entities paid **~14.5×** the baseline on-chain fee in 2025 versus **~2.58×** in 2021—even as average network fees fell roughly **89%** since 2022.

- **Mixers and OTC.** As sanctions removed prior mixers from play, **YoMix** grew **>5× in 2023**, with **~one-third** of inflows tied to hack-associated wallets, and was adopted by DPRK-linked actors.

## DPRK's broader campaign: social engineering and IT-worker infiltration

- **DMM Bitcoin (May 2024) shows the playbook.** An employee at **Ginco** (DMM's wallet software vendor) was lured via a fake **LinkedIn** recruiter into running a malicious **GitHub** "coding test," enabling session-cookie theft and a manipulated wallet operation that moved **4,502.9 BTC**.

- **IT-worker schemes at scale.** On **June 30, 2025**, the [U.S. Justice Department announced](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-coordinated-nationwide-actions-combat-north-korean-remote) coordinated actions across **16 states**, including searches of **29** laptop-farm locations and seizure of **~200** computers tied to DPRK remote-work revenue operations and related identity theft. U.S. Treasury guidance and sanctions throughout 2023–2025 emphasize that DPRK cyber and IT-worker activity **funds WMD and missile programs**. The **FBI's January 23, 2025** advisory specifically warns of **data-extortion** by discovered DPRK IT workers.

## The data-exposure problem

- **Massive leak surface.** Vránová told Baltic Honeybadger attendees that **>80 million** digital-asset user identities are exposed online and **~2.2 million** include home addresses—data criminals can cross-reference with on-chain heuristics to select targets.

- **Structure matters.** Transparent, public-ledger activity is a feature, but when combined with **centralized KYC data leaks**, it creates a targeting map. Chainalysis emphasizes that **operational security**—keeping balances and personal details private—matters as much as device hygiene.

## Practical security guidance for Bitcoiners (tiered by amount)

> The goal is to remove single points of failure, reduce coercion risk, and preserve recoverability. This is **not** an endorsement of any custodial platform.

**Under ~$10,000 (spending stack)**
- Use reputable mobile wallets with robust spending controls and 2FA on linked accounts. Consider **Blockstream Green** or **BlueWallet**.
- Basic OPSEC: don't advertise holdings; separate identity from spending; keep device OS up to date.

**~$10,000–$100,000 (savings stack)**
- Prefer hardware signing devices with air-gapped flows and metal backups stored separately. **Trezor**, **[Coldcard](https://coldhodl.com)**, **Ledger** are widely used.
- Consider a simple **2-of-3 multisig** using different vendors for key diversity; distribute backups geographically.

**>$100,000 (vault stack)**
- Move to **multisig setups** to eliminate single-key failure and mitigate coercion risk; distribute keys across jurisdictions where possible.
- **[Debifi](https://debifi.com)** offers non-custodial Bitcoin multisig solutions for high-value holdings.
- Add **time-locks** and **transaction policies** where supported; implement inheritance protocols and out-of-band recovery instructions.
- For public-facing individuals: professional physical-security consultation and home-address privacy hygiene.

- Treat emails/DMs about "job tests," "urgent code reviews," or "wallet updates" as hostile by default. Validate out-of-band. (See DMM/Ginco case above.)
- Separate devices and accounts by role (spend vs. sign vs. browse). Use passphrases and hardware-level PIN delays. Don't keep seed phrases where they can be found under duress.

## Myth #1: Bitcoin Is a Pyramid Scheme

Critics frequently claim Bitcoin operates as a financial pyramid where early adopters profit at the expense of newcomers. This fundamentally misunderstands how Bitcoin works.

Pyramid schemes transfer value from new participants to earlier ones without creating genuine utility. They collapse when recruitment slows because they produce nothing of value.

Bitcoin operates differently. It's an [open-source protocol](https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin) that enables peer-to-peer value transfer without intermediaries. The network doesn't require continuous recruitment to function. Bitcoin's value derives from its unique properties: fixed supply, censorship resistance, and permissionless access. Anyone can verify the code, run a node, or validate transactions. No central party controls who participates or benefits.

Bitcoin trades openly on global markets with transparent price discovery. Early adopters took substantial risk when Bitcoin had zero established value. Like any scarce asset gold, real estate, or art earlier acquisition at lower prices doesn't constitute a scam.
