While traditional financial institutions globally define banking as a safe haven for capital and a conduit for its movement, this promise remains unfulfilled for a staggering portion of the African population. As of 2024, only **43.9% of adults in Sub-Saharan Africa** hold an account at a formal financial institution. This systemic exclusion has paved the way for a quiet revolution: the rise of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Bitcoin trading. Far from being a mere speculative asset, Bitcoin has emerged as a pragmatic infrastructure for financial inclusion, filling the void left by a legacy banking system that is often too distant, too expensive, or too restrictive for the average citizen.

## The Trust and Access Deficit

The "access problem" in Africa is often a matter of structural barriers. For many, the requirements to open a traditional bank account - such as high minimum balances and formal documentation - are insurmountable. This is compounded by a significant gender gap; in 2024, only **52% of women** had a financial account compared to **64% of men**. P2P trading sidesteps these hurdles by leveraging the continent's high mobile penetration. With **84% of adults** in low and middle-income countries owning a mobile phone, the infrastructure for a new financial system is already in every pocket.

Beyond physical access lies the "trust dimension". In regions where bank collapses or sudden currency redesigns are within living memory, institutional trust is a rare commodity. P2P platform like **Hodl Hodl** do not ask users to trust a distant corporation with their life savings. Instead, they facilitate direct trades between individuals, secured by escrow contracts and reputation systems. This decentralized model shifts the burden of trust from an entire institution to a single, verifiable counterparty for a specific transaction.

## Escaping Currency Devaluation

For many African nations, the challenge is not just accessing a bank, but protecting the value of the money held within it. The **Nigerian Naira**, for instance, plummeted from approximately **460 NGN/USD in early 2023 to nearly 1,500 NGN/USD by early 2025**. In such environments, a bank account denominated in local currency is less a tool for savings and more a witness to the erosion of wealth.

![africa-crypto-adoption-table.png](https://zrhsczo76h2c.compat.objectstorage.eu-zurich-1.oraclecloud.com/hodlhodl-blog-production-mainnet/africa_crypto_adoption_table_b4bf000aa9.png)

Bitcoin offers an exit ramp from this volatility. By trading local currency for Bitcoin on P2P markets, individuals can hold an asset that exists outside the inflationary pressures of their national economy. This is particularly vital in countries where access to foreign exchange is strictly rationed by the state. Nigeria has subsequently become the **world's second-largest Bitcoin P2P market**, trailing only the United States, as citizens seek stability through digital assets.

## The Power of Payment Flexibility

The genius of P2P Bitcoin trading lies in its adaptability to existing "money rails". Unlike traditional banks, which operate on rigid, siloed systems, P2P buyers and sellers can agree on any payment method. Across Africa, this increasingly means **mobile money**.

> Someone with an M-Pesa account in Kenya, an MTN Mobile Money account in Ghana, or Airtel Money anywhere on the continent can trade Bitcoin using the same tools they use for groceries and utility bills.

This flexibility allows Bitcoin to integrate seamlessly with informal financial traditions. For decades, rotating savings clubs and community lending circles have served the unbanked. P2P trading shares this community-centric DNA, relying on direct relationships rather than a distant head office. It is not a replacement for these social structures but a digital extension of them.

## A Pragmatic Financial Tool

It is important to acknowledge that P2P trading is not a perfect substitute for all banking functions. It lacks the deposit insurance and consumer protections of regulated institutions, and Bitcoin’s own price volatility remains a significant risk factor. However, for millions of people, the choice is not between a "perfect" bank and Bitcoin; it is between a currency losing value and a digital alternative that actually works on their own terms.

As regulatory landscapes evolve - with **South Africa** issuing over 138 licenses to crypto service providers and **Nigeria** recognizing digital assets as securities under the **Investments and Securities Act 2025** - the bridge between traditional finance and P2P markets is strengthening. For the unbanked millions across the continent, P2P Bitcoin trading is more than a trend; it is the first financial tool that has ever truly given them a seat at the table.

Bitcoin P2P: Africa's Banking Alternative

For the average Nigerian, the volatility of the national currency is not a theoretical concept discussed by economists; it is a daily reality reflected in the rising cost of staples at the market and the shrinking value of monthly salaries. Between 2021 and 2024, the Nigerian Naira underwent a historic slide, moving from approximately **380 NGN/USD to an all-time high of 1,717 NGN/USD in late 2024** [1]. While the currency has found a measure of stability in 2026, trading around **1,381 NGN/USD**, the cumulative loss in purchasing power has been profound. In this climate, Bitcoin has transitioned from a niche interest to a critical financial lifeline for millions seeking to preserve their wealth.

## The Dual Threat: Devaluation and Inflation

The urgency behind Bitcoin adoption in Nigeria stems from a "pincer movement" of economic pressures. Savers have had to contend not only with the currency's external devaluation against the dollar but also with rampant domestic inflation. In June 2024, headline inflation peaked at a staggering **34.19%** [2]. Although inflation has cooled to approximately **15.93% as of May 2026**, the real-world impact remains severe. For anyone holding savings purely in Naira, these two forces have worked in tandem to erode the value of their labor.

## From Gray Market to Regulated Asset

The regulatory journey of Bitcoin in Nigeria has been as volatile as the currency itself. In February 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued a directive prohibiting banks from facilitating cryptocurrency transactions. Rather than stifling the market, this move catalyzed the growth of one of the world's most robust Peer-to-Peer (P2P) ecosystems, as Nigerians bypassed the banking system entirely to trade directly with one another.

Today, the landscape is significantly more structured. The **Investments and Securities Act (ISA) 2025** has formally classified digital assets as securities, bringing them under the oversight of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) [3]. This legislation requires platforms like **Quidax**, **Busha**, and **NairaEx** to obtain licenses to operate, providing a layer of investor protection that was previously absent. Furthermore, the CBN's reversal of its banking ban in late 2023 means that licensed exchanges can now officially interface with the traditional banking sector, although some internal compliance lags persist within individual banks.

## A Practical Playbook for the Modern Saver

For Nigerians using Bitcoin as a hedge, the strategy has shifted from speculative trading to long-term wealth preservation. The most effective approach involves **Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA)** - the practice of converting small, regular amounts of Naira into Bitcoin regardless of the current price. This method smooths out the impact of Bitcoin's own price volatility, which remains a significant risk for those with short-term liquidity needs.

> The goal for many is not to 'get rich quick' but to ensure that the money they earn today can still buy the same amount of bread, fuel, or tuition five years from now.

Practical safety remains paramount. While licensed local exchanges offer convenience, many experienced users still advocate for **self-custody** - holding one's own private keys rather than leaving funds on an exchange indefinitely. This minimizes "platform risk" ensuring that even if an exchange faces regulatory or technical hurdles, the individual's savings remain accessible.

## The Verdict: A Necessary Alternative

Bitcoin is not a risk-free asset, and its sharp price swings mean it is ill-suited for emergency funds or short-term expenses. However, when compared to a national currency that has lost over 70% of its value against the dollar in five years, the risk profile of Bitcoin appears in a different light. For the Nigerian population, Bitcoin has become more than just a digital currency; it is a pragmatic tool for financial sovereignty in an era of economic uncertainty.

How Nigerians Use Bitcoin to Beat Naira Devaluation

If you follow Bitcoin security, recent developments mark a structural shift in how vulnerabilities are found and exploited.

A recent scan using frontier open-source AI models uncovered critical bugs across multiple open-source Bitcoin repositories. Simultaneously, security research like Cloudflare’s Project Glasswing demonstrated how frontier AI models can spot isolated, low-level code anomalies and independently stitch them together into working, high-severity exploits.

The takeaway is clear: static code checks are no longer enough. AI has collapsed the cost of vulnerability discovery, allowing anyone to scan open-source codebases for zero-day exploits at scale.

Building non-custodial Bitcoin infrastructure requires treating security as a continuous, active discipline. Hodl Hodl addresses this reality through an automated, multi-layered security pipeline.

## The AI Security Harness: Moving to Continuous Auditing

Traditional security relies on periodic, one-off manual audits. To stay ahead of automated threats, Hodl Hodl established an in-house automated security harness designed for continuous vulnerability hunting.

- **Recon & Agent-Based Hunting**: The harness runs an automated loop that performs top-down code reconnaissance, followed by targeted agent-based vulnerability hunting.

- **Leveraging Model Stochasticity**: Rather than relying on a single expensive pass, the pipeline executes multiple audit waves using highly capable models like Kimi K3 and DeepSeek V4. Running recurring passes leverages the non-deterministic nature of AI models, uncovering varied attack vectors that a single scan might miss.

- **Context Optimization & Reachability**: To minimize false positives, the harness filters out "context bloat" and validates vulnerability reachability. Flaws in code paths inaccessible from production are filtered out, keeping remediation focused on genuine risks.

## Live Pentesting & Staging Verification

Code analysis is only half of the equation; dynamic behavior matters just as much.

During internal security evaluations, dynamic live pentesting was conducted against testnet environments. AI agents were given testnet wallets to interact with the platform like actual users - placing trades and executing escrow workflows. This process successfully identified and patched several real-time application issues before they could touch production.

## Findings & Rapid Remediation

During a recent evaluation, the automated harness flagged thousands of potential code anomalies using models like Kimi K3 and DeepSeek V4. While human verification filtered out non-exploitable noise, the harness and dynamic testnet pentesting successfully isolated few actionable vulnerabilities in application and escrow logic. **Every valid issue was patched immediately, regression-tested, and deployed straight to production to clear the backlog and harden the system against re-emergence.**

## The Operational Roadmap

Security at Hodl Hodl has evolved from one-off assessments into a continuous, sprint-integrated protocol. Moving forward, automated AI harnesses scan all repositories to audit new code as it ships, backed by intelligent noise-filtering tools for immediate fixes. To ensure complete coverage, this automated pipeline runs side-by-side with dynamic testnet pentesting and external security audits.

User protection demands staying steps ahead of modern threat vectors. By merging continuous AI-driven scanning with elite human audits, Hodl Hodl continuously raises the bar for peer-to-peer Bitcoin security.

Hodl Hodl: Security in the Age of AI

In the first part of this article we will cover the problems of centralized crypto exchanges such as: storing of personal information, custody of funds, facilitation of gambling and fractional reserve. In the second part we will explain how P2P solves them.

## KYC

KYC or know your customer requirements pose a real danger to the users. Imagine if your home address and the amount of bitcoin you have purchased over the years becomes public information. Criminals can quite literally knock on your door and physically force you to give up your bitcoin aka $5 wrench attack.

There were plenty of information leaks from a variety of different service providers, some of them ended up with text files containing personal details (email, phone number, home address) freely circulating in public chats. So this threat is not a hypothetical, but a real one.

## Custody of funds

As we say in bitcoin: Not your keys - not your coins. It means that if you transfer your bitcoin to a third party it’s no longer yours. And if the company goes bankrupt or gets hacked, in most cases you won’t see your money again.

Since you give up the ownership of your funds, exchanges can prevent withdrawals for any reason they see valid. Some exchanges for example can flag your account for using privacy preserving techniques, others may require additional information about you or a receiver of funds before you can make a transfer.

## Facilitation of gambling

Crypto exchanges are getting paid to offer tokens that are pretty much designed to rug pull investors. They don’t really mind if people are gaining or losing money, as long as they are taking home cold hard cash via commission.

There are also options of leverage trading that are promising bigger profits, but bitcoin is very volatile, so usually it just ends up destroying traders.

## Fractional reserve

When you are buying bitcoin on centralized exchanges what you are receiving might just be a number on the screen not backed by the real asset, which was learned the hard way by 1 million users of FTX. It used to be the 3rd largest exchange and when it filed for bankruptcy about $1.7 billion of customer funds were missing.

Pretty dark picture, but have no fear, P2P is here!

What are the benefits of buying bitcoin P2P? On Hodl Hodl deals are private, self custodial, secure, censorship resistant, you can create deals on your own terms, they are transparent as well as they offer an opportunity for arbitrage trading.

## Privacy

Bitcoin trading platform Hodl Hodl doesn’t collect private data of users. Registration is a very easy process where you provide an email address, click on a confirmation link, connect 2FA and you are good to go. Buying bitcoin is possible with gift cards or in person with cash.

## Self-custody

At no point in time Hodl Hodl takes custody of the user's funds. There is also no in-built wallet, so users must use their own wallets to interact with each other.

Hodl Hodl ensures every trader’s safety by providing a unique multisig escrow for every contract created. During the trade, bitcoin remains locked in the multisig escrow (P2SH) address on the blockchain. In order to release the Bitcoin from escrow, two (out of three) keys are needed. One belongs to the seller, one to the buyer, and another to Hodl Hodl.

## Censorship resistance

In countries that are hostile to bitcoin, P2P provides the way around the tyrannical restrictions. Essentially it might be the only way for an individual to complete a bitcoin trade.

## Your own terms

It is possible to sell bitcoin over the market price and sometimes find offers to buy below the market price using your preferred payment methods. Users can also submit payment methods for a review if they are not listed.

## Transparency

Both parties can independently verify the amount of bitcoin locked in the escrow. It can be done by using freely available blockchain explorers or by using your own bitcoin full node. What it means is that you don’t have to trust your counterparty, instead you can verify the legitimacy of the deal yourself.

In addition Hodl Hodl is very clear about the fee structure and is automatically breaking it down for the users to see.

## Arbitrage opportunities

Arbitrage opportunities can appear because of a bitcoin discount on centralized exchanges, also between different payment methods and different currencies there might be a price difference. So it is possible to utilize P2P exchanges to earn.

## Conclusion

If you remember anything from this article it’s that: KYC is an activity that puts users in danger. By sending your bitcoin to a centralized exchange you lose the ownership of it. Gambling with the best money the world has ever seen is a suboptimal idea.

Why to buy bitcoin P2P?

With the increase of hacks, leaks, and physical attacks, the question some are asking themselves is: Why am I here? Why hold Bitcoin? For some of us, the answer is easy: it is to bring freedom and peace to as many individuals as possible. As of now, it is hard to find a better tool for this task than Bitcoin.

## Redefining Peace

When we talk about world peace, we often think of nations signing treaties and laying down arms, but global harmony is impossible without individual peace of mind. Only when enough people choose peace over violence will there be change.

Another important point to consider is that prosperity will contribute to more peace when combined with holistic education and redistribution of wealth. Economist Edward Peter Stringham found a negative correlation between homicide rates and economic freedom, which suggests that Bitcoin’s inclusive nature will enhance well-being of individuals, as it allows for more people to join financial markets and helps them to improve their level of comfort.

So let us look at how Bitcoin can bring about the change. First of all it is crucial to understand that global sound money will reduce the size and the power of governments. That will result in:

## Less propaganda

The educational system in most countries is a machine of indoctrination and is aimed at raising obedient workers. Implementing a holistic approach towards education offers the promise of a new era in arts and philosophy. This transformation will cultivate individuals with heightened sensitivity and nuance, contributing to a more enlightened and empathetic society.

Elevating human awareness beyond nationalistic ideologies is essential in creating a shared vision of a unified human race. The shift towards a deeper understanding of the similarities between individuals reduces the tendency to engage in hostile actions against other people.

## No involuntary taxation

Involuntary taxation is extortion and Bitcoin provides means to transform this into consensual contributions for specific causes, ensuring transparency and verifiable results. Keeping in mind that inflation is a form of taxation, the direct correlation between human prosperity and the absence of taxation becomes evident.

Moreover, without forced taxation the funding of the military-industrial complex becomes challenging.

## Less bureaucracy

Politicians are put in a privileged position where they can legally extract wealth from citizens by the means of taxation and coercion. Reduction in government size leads to more human resources available for economic growth and technological advancements. It is clear that together with AI, Bitcoin contributes to reduction of bureaucratic apparatus and is freeing more hands to work on, for example, corn fields, which will lead to more prosperity.

Bitcoin is a permissionless network. The prospect of financial inclusion without the bureaucratic hurdles is truly transformative and has the potential to alleviate significant hardships. Thanks to technological progress, even individuals with [old feature phones](https://8333.mobi) can now engage with Bitcoin.

## More innovation

Without overbearing regulations, innovation and entrepreneurship can thrive. Reducing barriers to entry for new players and easing burdensome requirements on existing companies is a step towards prosperity and hence more peace.

## Geographical arbitrage

Bitcoin enables easy wealth relocation, allowing people to move to more favorable locations amid changing political landscapes. As the popularity of online work grows and nomadic lifestyles become more commonplace, localities will compete against each other by providing better services and less restrictions.

## Free market

Unrestricted markets, coupled with a unified currency, promote the smooth exchange of goods and services, mitigating distortions in price signals and removing the need for exchange rate calculations in international business. This reduction in signal distortion aids long-term planning and encourages peaceful cooperation between nations.

The freedom for consensual exchange among individuals can lead to the legalization of prohibited substances. This, in turn, has the potential to diminish organized crime and violence, as the removal of the price premium reduces incentives for harmful activities.

## Reduced coercion

When stored securely, bitcoin becomes resistant to government seizure and theft. If someone obtains bitcoin in a peer to peer manner and handles it anonymously, it’s close to impossible to even know that an individual owns any bitcoin in the first place. This dynamic shifts the balance, making traditional governmental methods of extortion obsolete. Individuals gain significant power to resist immoral actions of the government, while maintaining the ability to conduct financial transactions.

Bitcoin presents a challenge for governments and other criminal organizations seeking to employ violence against individuals, as the expected results are likely to fall short of their anticipations, hence bringing more peaceful ways of conflict resolution.

## Collaborative international efforts

A future scenario may emerge where internationally supported companies are established with the specific mission of safeguarding the Earth against external threats such as meteors and solar flares. These entities could serve as global initiatives, pooling resources and expertise to address potential existential risks to our planet.

Today, humanity struggles to align on long-term existential goals because fiat economies incentivize short-term survival and endless military expansion. To make true global collaboration possible, the economic incentive structure must change. This requires dismantling the primary engine of modern state overreach: the central bank. By taking away the money printer, Bitcoin fundamentally reduces the power of central banks, yielding several transformative economic outcomes:

## No manipulation of price of credit

According to the Austrian business cycle theory, central banks by implementing artificially low interest rates and facilitating fractional reserve banking contribute to malinvestment, ultimately leading to economic recessions. Bitcoin holds the potential to mitigate or even bring an end to the traditional boom and bust cycles, offering a more stable economic foundation.

## No bailouts

The reduction in central bank power implies a decreased likelihood of bailouts. This shift discourages reckless corporate behavior and prevents the artificial preservation of inefficient companies. Moreover, the practice of providing monetary handouts to corporations contributes to the Cantillon Effect. This phenomenon ensures that those receiving government handouts first gain the most benefits, as they can enjoy the advantages before the general increase in prices. Without an endless money printer, those types of actions are becoming incredibly costly, bringing back free market competition that is essential for economic development.

## No currency debasement

As mentioned before, inflation is a form of taxation and even with a seemingly modest rate of 3% annually, it results in a significant erosion of purchasing power, amounting to a 25% loss over a decade. It means that you can buy one quarter less things after just ten years. Without a constant erosion of money, individuals can avoid the need to constantly make investment decisions, as their money becomes a reliable store of value. Instead they can shift their focus towards a proper understanding of self-custody and understanding the threats associated with online crime. By understanding these concerns, individuals can confidently preserve the value of their currency over time. Maintaining a stable store of value becomes the foundation for effective long-term planning, cultivating a sense of peace, and promoting low time preference.

There are couple more aspects of bitcoin that are beneficial to individuals and society in general:

## Superior savings technology

As more individuals adopt better tools for saving, a cascade of positive effects unfolds. Increased free time becomes available, potentially leading to greater investment in one’s healthcare, both mental and physical. The newfound financial security allows for the pursuit of spirituality without fear of instability. This financial flexibility also offers an escape from the traditional nine-to-five rat race, enabling people to relocate to self-sufficient rural locations. This shift contributes to reduction of city density and enhances overall well-being of individuals. Moreover, as we reach a certain level of comfort, there is a noticeable inclination towards helping others and sharing resources through charity work.

## Bitcoin mining

Finally, bitcoin mining can enhance the resilience of the electrical grid by incorporating demand response mechanisms, as miners have the ability to rapidly curtail significant electric loads. In addition, by subsidizing the renewable sources of electricity and utilizing flare gases, bitcoin mining reduces the carbon footprint of other industries.

In essence, the “number go up” technology of Bitcoin alone may not be a direct path to a peaceful world. However, when harmonized with a proper education, a spiritual and philosophical awakenings, and the use of tools for self-custody and privacy, Bitcoin is a potent instrument that significantly contributes towards world peace.

In Kenya, the definition of "money" has long been synonymous with the phone in one's pocket. Since its launch in 2007, M-Pesa has transformed from a simple mobile money service into a national financial rail, boasting over **40 million monthly active customers** as of March 2026 [1]. This two-decade legacy of mobile-first finance has done more than just digitize the Kenyan Shilling; it has created a population that is uniquely primed for the adoption of Bitcoin. For many Kenyans, the transition from M-Pesa to a Bitcoin wallet is not a leap into the unknown, but a natural evolution of a digital habit they have practiced for nearly twenty years.

## A Shared Digital DNA

The synergy between M-Pesa and Bitcoin is structural. M-Pesa proved that a vast population could manage its financial life without a traditional bank account, building a foundation of trust in phone-based transactions. Today, this trust is the primary engine for Kenya's thriving Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Bitcoin market. On platforms like **Binance P2P** and **Noones**, M-Pesa is the dominant payment method. Traders send Shillings directly from their M-Pesa balances to a seller, while the Bitcoin is held in a secure escrow — a process that mirrors the instant settlement and mobile-centric nature of M-Pesa itself.

![A Shared Digital DNA](https://zrhsczo76h2c.compat.objectstorage.eu-zurich-1.oraclecloud.com/hodlhodl-blog-staging/A_Shared_Digital_DNA_55612eadf9.jpg)

## The Regulatory Turning Point

For years, Kenya’s crypto market operated in a legal gray zone. However, 2025 marked a decisive shift toward formalization. The **Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASP) Act 2025**, enacted in November, established a comprehensive framework for the industry [2]. Under this new regime, a dual-regulator model has emerged: the **Central Bank of Kenya (CBK)** oversees payment-related services and stablecoins, while the **Capital Markets Authority (CMA)** supervises investment platforms and exchanges.

As of early 2026, the National Treasury has unveiled draft **VASP Regulations** that require all service providers to be registered as Kenyan companies with robust anti-money laundering (AML) protocols [4]. While the licensing process is still in its nascent stages, this move toward regulation is expected to attract institutional capital and provide greater security for the millions of Kenyans who already use digital assets.

## Solving the Cross-Border Puzzle

While M-Pesa is unrivaled for domestic payments, it faces significant hurdles at the border. This is where Bitcoin and stablecoins have found their most pragmatic use case: **remittances and international trade**. Kenya has a massive global diaspora, and traditional remittance channels remain notoriously slow and expensive.

> *"By leveraging Bitcoin's Lightning Network or stablecoins, Kenyans can receive funds from abroad in seconds for a fraction of the cost of a traditional bank wire."*

This utility extends to Kenya’s growing population of digital freelancers and remote workers. Many who work for international clients have historically faced payment delays or account holds on platforms like PayPal. Using Bitcoin as a bridge — receiving crypto and then cashing out to M-Pesa via a P2P trade — has become a standard workaround that offers faster liquidity and lower fees.

## Beyond Domestic Boundaries

Bitcoin is not a replacement for M-Pesa; rather, it is a powerful extension. M-Pesa remains the king of everyday domestic commerce, from paying for groceries to settling utility bills. Bitcoin, however, solves the problems that M-Pesa alone cannot: protecting savings from the Shilling's inflation and enabling seamless cross-border movement.

As Kenya moves into 2026, the integration of these two systems represents a unique "leapfrog" moment. A population that skipped the traditional banking era to embrace mobile money is now skipping the limitations of national borders to embrace a global, decentralized financial system. In Kenya, the future of money is not just mobile — it is borderless.

- **Browse offers** – You’ll see a list of offers from sellers:

- **Filter field** – Use this to narrow offers by currency, purchase amount, payment method, and country.
>![Image014.png](https://zrhsczo76h2c.compat.objectstorage.eu-zurich-1.oraclecloud.com/hodlhodl-blog-staging/Image014_8cdb87d6ce.png)

* **Offer details** – Each listing displays:
  - Seller’s username
  - Success rate of past trades
  - Total completed trades

  - Offer description (terms and instructions from the creator)

- **Create your own offer** – If none of the existing listings suit you, you can publish a custom offer with your preferred terms and limits.

### **Payment Password & Bitcoin address**

- Every time you interact with an offer, a unique multisignature (multisig) escrow Bitcoin address is created for that contract.
- Both the buyer and the seller must have a payment password before the escrow address can be generated.

**What is the payment password?**
- The payment password is the password used to encrypt the keys that are required to generate and access escrow. From the trader’s perspective, the payment password is used to deposit and release Bitcoin, to and from escrow. Every trader is asked to create a payment password during the first contract, it can also be done in the Dashboard settings.

**What's the difference between an account password and a payment password?**
- The account password is the password that you use to access your account and make changes to your profile.
- The payment password is used to encrypt the key to an escrow address, and to deposit Bitcoin into escrow and release Bitcoin from escrow.

### **How to create a payment password**

**Option 1 - First‑time popup (recommended)**
- The first time you accept or create a contract, a popup window will appear asking you to set a payment password. Just follow the prompts and save the password in a secure place (e.g., a password manager).
>![Image015.png](https://zrhsczo76h2c.compat.objectstorage.eu-zurich-1.oraclecloud.com/hodlhodl-blog-staging/Image015_c3b7c97dc1.png)

Hodl Hodl Beginner Guide: Buy and Sell Bitcoin Step by Step

Ask someone in Lagos or Harare what they think a "safe asset" is, and you'll get a very different answer than you'd get on Wall Street. In the US, a reserve asset means something stable, like a treasury bond or gold, but across much of Africa, many believe keeping their money in their local currency is safe. A growing number are beginning to see that the local currency itself is the ‘risky asset’, and people have been improvising alternatives for decades.

## Why Africans look for alternatives to local currencies

This isn't new behavior. Zimbabweans have held US dollars under mattresses for years because the local currency lost so much value so fast that keeping savings in it felt like setting money on fire slowly instead of quickly. Nigerians convert naira to dollars whenever they can, not out of some ideological preference for American currency, but because the naira has depreciated sharply and repeatedly against the dollar. Ghanaians have watched the cedi slide too. This is a continent full of people who already understand, from lived experience rather than theory, that a currency's value isn't guaranteed just because a government prints it.

The problem with using the dollar as your escape hatch is that it's not actually available to everyone, and it's not actually neutral. Capital controls in several countries restrict how much foreign currency you can hold or move. Getting dollars often means going through informal markets at unfavorable rates, or navigating banking restrictions that assume you're trying to do something wrong just because you want to protect your savings. And the dollar itself isn't immune to inflation, it's just been a slower, steadier decline than most African currencies.

## Bitcoin as a reserve asset

Bitcoin offers something genuinely different: a reserve asset that isn't controlled by any single government, that has a fixed and known supply, and that you can hold and move without asking anyone's permission. You don't need a foreign bank account. You don't need to be approved for a certain transaction limit. You need a wallet.

It's also worth pointing out that holding Bitcoin as a reserve asset doesn't require abandoning local currency entirely, and nobody sensible is suggesting that. Day-to-day spending still runs through naira, cedis, shillings, or whatever currency is used locally. The idea is closer to keeping a portion of savings in something with a fundamentally different risk profile than the currency you're paid in, the same logic that's driven dollar and gold demand across the region for decades, just applied to a newer, more accessible asset.

This matters most for people who don't have easy access to strong foreign currencies in the first place. A trader in Kenya with a smartphone can hold Bitcoin just as easily as a hedge fund in New York can. That's a genuine leveling of the playing field, not a marketing line. The same asset, held under the same rules, accessible to someone with a few thousand shillings as it is to someone with millions of dollars.

It's also worth noting this shift isn't purely grassroots anymore. Companies and even some governments outside Africa have begun holding Bitcoin on their balance sheets as a reserve asset, treating it the way they might treat gold. That doesn't make Bitcoin's short-term volatility any less real, but it does suggest the "is this a legitimate reserve asset" debate is settling in Bitcoin's favor among a widening group of serious, well-resourced institutions, not just individuals protecting their savings from a weak local currency.

None of this means Bitcoin is a stable store of value in the short term. It isn't, and treating it like one is a mistake. Prices swing hard, sometimes by double digit percentages in a single week. Anyone putting rent money or school fees into Bitcoin on a short timeline is taking on real risk they should understand clearly before they do it.

The comparison that actually matters isn't Bitcoin against a stable currency. Most people across the continent don't have access to one of those anyway. The comparison is Bitcoin against a currency that's already losing value year after year, sometimes catastrophically. Judged against that baseline, and held with a longer time horizon rather than treated as a savings account substitute for next month's rent, Bitcoin starts to look less like a speculative bet and more like what a growing number of Africans already treat it as: one more hedge against a problem their currencies have never solved.

Bitcoin: The Global Reserve Asset for Africa

When you browse offers on Hodl Hodl, you will frequently come across payment methods like **WISE, REVOLUT, NALA, REMITLY, STRIKE, SENDWAVE, WESTERN UNION, PAYSEND, or XOOM**. Normally, you would expect your counterparty to use that exact online payment system or neobank. However, that isn’t always the case.

A common practice on the platform is utilizing these compatible international payment systems to send funds directly to mobile wallets, most notably **M-Pesa**. To eliminate confusion and protect our community, Hodl Hodl has introduced dedicated payment methods and a **mandatory selection policy** for these trades.

This updated guide explains how these international transfers work, why they are safe, and the critical new rules every user must follow.

## **What’s New: Dedicated M-Pesa Methods & Mandatory Policy**

To streamline trading and close the "expectation gap" between buyers and sellers, Hodl Hodl has launched dedicated transfer options.

Moving forward, the following specific payment methods are available in your dashboard:

* **M-PESA (Revolut)**
* **M-PESA (Wise)**
* **M-PESA (Remitly)**

**⚠️ Mandatory Selection Policy:** If you are creating an offer that involves an M-Pesa transfer, you **must** select the specific "M-Pesa" variation instead of the standard Revolut, Wise, or Remitly options. Continuing to use the incorrect standard payment methods for M-Pesa transactions is a policy violation and **may result in your account being temporarily or permanently blocked.**

## **What is M-Pesa?**

M-Pesa is a mobile money platform launched in Kenya in 2007 that has since expanded across several African countries. It is essentially a mobile wallet that allows people to store, send, and receive money using their mobile phone — no traditional bank account required. Think of it as a digital wallet tied directly to a phone number.

In East Africa, M-Pesa is the primary way millions of people handle everyday finances. When a Hodl Hodl seller provides their M-Pesa details, they are giving you the equivalent of their bank account information. It’s just that their "bank" lives on their phone.

## **How an M-Pesa Trade Works on Hodl Hodl**

Revolut, Wise, and Remitly natively support sending money internationally to M-Pesa accounts. It isn't a workaround or a hack; it’s a standard, built-in feature sitting right inside those apps.

On Hodl Hodl, every trade is protected by a [2-of-3 multisignature Bitcoin escrow](https://hodlhodl.com/blog/en/escrow-explained#what-is-escrow). This security works exactly the same way whether payment goes through a standard fiat transfer or a mobile wallet.

Here is what a typical trade looks like using **M-PESA (Revolut)** as an example:

1. **Find the Offer:** You find an offer listed under the dedicated **M-PESA (Revolut)** method and read the Offer Description.
2. **Lock Escrow:** You accept the offer, creating a Purchase Contract. The seller deposits Bitcoin into the [multisig escrow address](https://hodlhodl.com/blog/en/escrow-explained#how-does-multisig-escrow-work).
3. **Share Details:** Once the Bitcoin is locked (status: **In progress**), the seller shares their M-Pesa details (name, mobile provider, and phone number) in the trade chat.
4. **Send the Transfer:** You open your Revolut app, tap **Payments → International**, select the destination country (e.g., Kenya), choose **M-Pesa**, and input the seller's details.
5. **Review Fees:** Revolut shows you the exchange rate and fees. Review and confirm. The money typically arrives in the seller's wallet within seconds.
6. **Release Bitcoin:** You mark the payment as **Paid** on Hodl Hodl. The seller confirms receipt and releases the Bitcoin from escrow to complete the trade.

## **Writing Better Offer Descriptions: What Sellers Need To Know**

[Hodl Hodl's Terms of Service](https://hodlhodl.com/tos) require that all information provided in an offer - currency, instructions, and payment methods - must be **true and accurate**.

As selecting the new dedicated M-Pesa labels is now mandatory, your offer descriptions should perfectly mirror that selection to ensure seamless trades.

### **A Practical Template for Sellers**

"Payment via Revolut's international transfer to M-Pesa (Kenya). This is a standard built-in feature of the Revolut app - go to Send → International → Kenya → M-Pesa. You'll see the exact fees and exchange rate before confirming. Transfer typically arrives in seconds. This is NOT a standard Revolut-to-Revolut tag transfer. If you haven't used this feature before, message me in chat and I'll walk you through it."

### **How Disputes, Reputation, and Compliance Are Affected**

* **Disputes:** Hodl Hodl’s support staff resolves disputes by inspecting the Offer Description, chat messages, and payment evidence. If you accurately label your offer using the new M-Pesa methods and explicitly outline the steps, support can quickly resolve issues in your favor.
* **Cancellations:** Clear offers eliminate confusion, protecting your completion rate and public reputation score.
* **Third-Party Rule:** Remember, Hodl Hodl’s Terms of Service strictly prohibit third parties from making or receiving payments. The M-Pesa account used must belong to the account holder.
* **Enforcement:** Offers using standard "Revolut" or "Wise" labels for M-Pesa transactions will be hidden or removed. Repeated violations will lead to **account suspension or termination** under our updated compliance policy.

## **Common Questions from Buyers**

**Will my payment app flag my account for sending to Kenya?**

Revolut, Wise, and Remitly actively support international transfers to M-Pesa. However, Hodl Hodl is an independent platform and is not affiliated with these providers. You are solely responsible for complying with your provider's terms and conditions.

**What about exchange rate costs?**

Apps like Revolut and Wise display the exact exchange rate and any conversion fees before you hit send. You can factor these transparent costs into your evaluation of the trade before committing.

**Is it complicated?**

It requires a few more taps than a simple peer-to-peer tag transfer, but the apps walk you through it seamlessly. Once you do it once, it becomes second nature.

**What if the seller claims they didn't receive the money?**

Keep your transaction receipts handy. If an issue arises, you can open a dispute. Please review Hodl Hodl's [Dispute Rules](https://hodlhodl.com/pages/dispute_rules) for guidance.

## **Key Takeaways**

* **For Buyers:** An unfamiliar payment rail isn't a dangerous one. As long as you use the built-in international transfer features of Wise or Revolut to send to the seller's M-Pesa, Hodl Hodl's multisig escrow protects your trade.
* **For Sellers:** You **must** use the new dedicated **M-PESA (Revolut/Wise/Remitly)** payment methods. Failing to do so can get your account blocked. Pair the correct method with a stellar offer description to keep your trading volume healthy and dispute-free.
